Troopers play softball for Autism (freelance assignment)

The 9th Annual East Coast Regional Women's State Police Charity Softball Tournament was held at Patriot Park in Spotsylvania on Sunday.  More than 250 female troopers from nine states battled it out on the softball fields to help raise money and awareness for autistic children and their families.

Special guests included Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and Virginia Secretary of Public Saftey Maria Graff Decker

Below are additional images I captured of the event.

Family Session

Hola folks,

Just wanted to post a few images from a recent shoot with the Burns family.  We had lots of fun hanging out last weekend and got some very nice images along the way.

DC Photo/Bike Ride

This past Sunday I spent a few hours with some friends on a nice bike ride in DC.  Our goal was to see some of the sights, take a few pictures and get a little exercise along the way.  I had a real good time despite the heat.  We ended our day eating dinner at a Mongolian BBQ in Chinatown.

Thanks to Brian, Ryan, Omar, Galen, Dave and Erik for hanging out.  Hope to do it again soon.

Here are a few of my images.  Click to enlarge.

prepare for a portrait session

Some people can be a little un-easy about getting their picture taken by a photographer. There are a variety of personal reasons one could feel that way. I am here to tell you that it doesn't have to be, nor should it be a bad experience. A good photographer understands that their primary responsibility is to make this a great experience - even more important than the final product delivered to the client.

Trust is very important aspect of a photo session. You and the photographer should have the same goals and be comfortable with each other. Hopefully this is a relationship that will last well beyond your session.

Once in the studio or on-location you shouldn't have to worry about much. This is where the photographer typically leads the effort of working through different set ups, lighting, posing, etc. But, this is a collaboration so don't be hesitant to be a participant in the creative process. I love it when a client gets into the event and suggest some interesting ideas. To help ensure a great experience there are some things you can do ahead of time to minimize any stress. Just some basic things to think about and do before a photo shoot.

Communication

  • Contact the photographer prior to the event
  • Go over the anything special you have in mind.
  • Confirm date, time and location.

Rest up

  • Get a good night’s sleep, we all look better when we’re rested and looking fresh

Pick out your wardrobe in advance

  • You don’t want to scramble through your closet the day of the shoot Ask for ideas from the photographer.
  • Generally, more solid garments photograph better than a busy outfit.

Bring what you need

  • You may need to freshen up make-up or even your hair.
  • Consider you might be changing clothes, will you need different accessories?

Allow more time than expected

  • You will have a rough idea on the length of the session. But free up more time on your schedule in case you run over. You don't want to feel rushed towards the end - especially if things are starting to really click. A good photographer isn't watching the clock during the shoot and will take as much time needed to get those special images.

Relax

  • Nothing to be nervous about, this will be a lot of fun. So prepare a little, relax and enjoy the moment.

Festival Français and l’Omelette Géante

Today was the Festival Francais at the New Riverfront Park in Fredericksburg.  This event celebrates the 30th anniversary as a sister city with Fréjus, France, with a fabulous French Market of over 30 vendors and the cooking of a Giant Omelet (5,000 eggs) for all to share.

I want to thank all the folks who stopped by my booth and purchased prints.  It was a pleasure to talk to all the friendly people.  It was a real scorcher out there but there was a great turnout.

A very special thank you to my lovely wife who helped me throughout the event.

I had to man my booth for the event but I did manage to get away to capture some images of the band "Foul Play".  They also sounded great.

Class of 2022

Today was Joshua's turn for a graduation.  Well, it was the Kindergarten Recognition Ceremony to be more accurate.  We are very proud of him.

Part of the event was for the students to walk across the stage and get their diploma.  Each child did a great job.  When Josh was called he did this weird "moonwalk thing" that gave everyone a good laugh.  Leave it to Josh to liven up the show.

After the event there was a quick get together in his classroom for the students, parents and teachers.  Josh wanted to take some pictures of his own, so I handed him the G11 and off he went.  Here are a few samples of his work.   These are some of his friends that helped make for a wonderful year.

World Wide Photo Walk date announced

3rd Annual Scott Kelby Photo Walk

This year’s annual photo walk will be on July 24, 2010.  It gets bigger and bigger each year with more cities and participants.  There should be plenty of opportunities for local photographers, hobbyist and others to find a walk near them and join the fun.

Go here to search for a location near you.  New cities become available everyday so check back often .  You can even sign up to become a walk leader and make it happen for your neck of the woods.  You will meet some great people and have a lot of fun.

Here are a few images from a previous World Wide Photo Walk in Fredericksburg.

Hope to see you there.

photowalk with Tom

I decided to take a short photowalk around town today.  Everything is still such a mess with all the snow so I only hit a few spots.  I put this quick slideshow together for you to join me in my travels and share some of the images.

Also, I just realized I misspelled Expodisc in the slide show. Not going to recompile it again, so were just going to let it go :)

Blizzard 2010

Today was a beautiful sunny day.  Even warmed up a bit by the afternoon so I planned to take a nice long walk in the battlefield to get some shots.  Unfortunately,  not much plowing has occurred so didn't even make it out of my neighborhood.  Oh well, was still fun to get out of the house.  Here were a few sights along the way.

That's it for now

Snowy photoshoot

We got another foot of snow this weekend.  And while this can be fun for some, it made for a very, very long commute for friends I shot this weekend.  But we made the best of it and had alot of fun during our time together.

Michael Alban was part of the group that made the snowy trek.  Michael is a freelance musician, actor and model.  As an actor, he has worked as a stand-in and photo double for Ben Affleck and has been a featured extra in scenes with Russell Crowe for the films Body of Lies (2008) and State of Play (2009).  He was also in the November issue of Entrepreneur Magazine.

We shot for several hours - including many wardrobe changes and various creative lighting set-ups.  I want to thank Elysia, Suzanne and Michael for toughing it out and keeping a positive attitude throughout.  Here is just a sample of our day.
